About Canyon Crest Academy
Thank you for your interest in Canyon Crest Academy!
Canyon Crest Academy (CCA) was established in 2004 and is the newest comprehensive high school in the acclaimed San Dieguito Union High School District. Our district’s three other high schools include Torrey Pines High School, La Costa Canyon High School, and San Dieguito Academy, and Sunset High School is our district’s alternative high school.
CCA is located in the fast-growing Carmel Valley area of San Diego, and we serve approximately 2,400 students. Most of our students live in the Carmel Valley area, or Rancho Santa Fe, Solana Beach, and Del Mar, but our school is open to any student who wants to enroll here, provided students and families reside in our district’s attendance area and follow the guidelines in the SDUHSD High School Selection process.
Our Vision, Mission, Values, and Goals guide our actions:
We have a professional staff of approximately 100 certificated employees (administrators, teachers, counselors, school psychologist, and speech and language pathologist), and 25 classified employees (clerical, campus supervisors, custodial, instructional assistants) who support our students.
We are proud of our students’ accomplishments in academics, in the arts, in athletics, and in clubs and in publications, such as CCA-TV, Pulse Magazine, and our Yearbook. CCA has been ranked consistently as one of the best high schools in the state and country, and we are a California Distinguished School.
CCA operates on a 4x4 schedule. This means that students take up to 4 courses in first term and up to 4 different courses 2nd term for a total of up to 8 classes in a year. Students attend their classes every day and most classes are 90 minute blocks. A year’s worth of content is included but the course only lasts half of the year. The 4x4 block schedule is ideal for students who like a fast-paced environment while carrying fewer courses at one time. This schedule also works well for those students who like a change halfway through the year. The 4x4’s original intent was to give students the option to explore their passions and interests and take more courses in areas of interest to ensure that their educational experience has depth and application. Students often take more arts classes, for example, or they take more courses in a Career Technical Education (CTE) pathway. Some students choose to take an unscheduled period either period 1 or period 4 to give them more time to study, or to provide them with balance if they are engaged in extracurricular activities.
Unique to CCA is our Envision Conservatory Program. This is a 5th period option for 10th - 12th graders, based on auditions, to deepen their experience in one of seven disciplines: Cinema, Dance, Visual Arts, Humanities, Instrumental Music, Theater, and Vocal Music. These programs are supplemented by guest artists who are experts in their fields and genres.
CCA has a Homeroom program almost every Thursday, and it is a 35 minute class dedication to building connections and community on campus. All teachers, administrators, and counselors are homeroom teachers, and our students stay with the same homeroom until they graduate. We also use this time for life and career skills, social emotional programming, and counseling presentations.
