CAASPP Testing

2025 / 2026 information coming soon

2024/2025 School year information below:

Dear Parent/Guardian:

Each year, students participate in the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). Your student will take the following statewide tests, depending on their grade level or instructional program:
  • Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments (SBAC) for English language arts and math, required tests in grades 3–8 and 11.
  • California Science Test (CAST), a required test in grades 5 and 8 and once in high school. SDUHSD students participate in the CAST in grade 11.

The testing schedule is listed below:

Testing will take place the week of April 7th-11th, 2025.

Below are a few ways you can help you student prepare for the statewide tests:
  • Review the importance of testing with your students. Results from CAASPP testing provides parents and educators with meaningful information on school and district progress so they can participate in decisions to improve student learning.
  • Explore the practice tests with your student at caaspp.org/practice-and-training/index.html so they can become familiar with the platform and setup of the tests.
  • High school student’s CAASPP scores are used for multiple programs that benefit students, see this flyer  for more information.
  • Flyer for CCA students on what to bring

You will receive your student’s results at or before the beginning of the next school year. The results will identify where your student is doing well or needs more help, so you can better support their learning at home and teachers can better support their learning in the classroom.
To learn more about these tests go to the Starting Smarter web page at ca.startingsmarter.org/, or review the Parent Guides to Understanding at cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/ca/parentguidetounderstand.asp.

If you have questions, please contact Brianna Castellanos at Brianna.Castellanos@sduhsd.net .

Sincerely,
CCA Administration

Important information to prepare for test date

  • Make sure to bring your Chromebook each day, fully charged. The test is only accessible through your Chromebook.
  • If you have not used your Chromebook lately, make sure to turn it on and check if it needs to be updated. If the Chromebook is not updated on test date, it will delay your start time for your test. You can check with our Learning Commons Technician to assist you with making sure it is updated.
  • Although we will provide you with wired head phones, we strongly encourage you to bring your own wired headphones if you have one that connect to your Chromebook. You only need it for the English Language Arts portion of testing that is given on the first day of testing.
  • Make sure to get plenty of rest and have a good breakfast. Lunch is later in the day for the week of testing.
  • Bring a book in the event that you finish early.
  • Also, you may be wondering how testing will work if you have an unscheduled period.
You are still expected to test during the testing block even if you have an unscheduled period. We will be taking attendance and you will be marked truant if you do not arrive to your scheduled location for testing. When you arrive on campus on test day, ask any teacher or head to student services and they will direct you to the location for testing if you are testing during an unscheduled period.  There will be signs that indicate where you should go posted at student services.

ELPAC Testing

Students who are designated English Language Learners will be tested with the English Language Proficiency Assessment for California (ELPAC).  These assessments are important in helping us determine appropriate supports and classes for students.  All students who are designated as an English Language Learner must take this assessment.

We are scheduled to administer the ELPAC in the spring on  February 28th, 2025. Students will receive further information as we get closer to testing date. If you have any questions regarding the ELPAC, please contact Lara Rhoads, EL Coordinator (lara.rhoads@sduhsd.net), Vanessa McPherson, EL Counselor (vanessa.mcpherson@sduhsd.net) or Brianna Castellanos, Assistant Principal (brianna.castellanos@sduhsd.net).  Please see the linked powerpoint from last year for further information.

STAR Testing

The Star Reading and Star Math are both short, low stakes, computer adaptive, academic assessments. They help teachers better understand what students know and can do in the areas of reading and math. Teachers use this information to guide their instruction. All students in grades 7-12 take this assessment in either their English and/or Math class.

PFT: Physical Fitness Testing

The physical fitness test (PFT) for students in California schools is the FITNESSGRAM®. The main goal of the test is to help students in starting life-long habits of regular physical activity. Students in grades five, seven, and nine take the fitness test. The test has six parts that show a level of fitness that offer a degree of defense against diseases that come from inactivity. The test results can be used by students, teachers, and parents.
