Start Smart/Parking Permits

The California Highway Patrol's Start Smart program is a driver safety education class which targets new and future licensed teenage drivers between the age of 15-20. S.D.U.H.S.D. Board Policy requires that every high school student wishing to receive an on campus parking permit must have completed the CHP Start Smart course with a parent or legal guardian.
The Start Smart course is two hours long and is free to all SDUHSD students. Students and a parent/guardian must attend together. Officers from the San Diego County Sheriff Department – Encinitas Substation and California Highway Patrol’s offices will discuss traffic avoidance techniques, collision causing factors, driver/parent responsibilities and seatbelt usage. The Start Smart class was offered last year as a response to the numerous teen car crashes and related fatalities in our community. The Start Smart class provides an opportunity for teens and their parents/guardians to discuss the serious laws, obligations and responsibilities, and family expectations that are part of driving a car.
Please see the Start Smart calendar for times and locations for the entire year. Space is limited so please sign up as soon as possible by clicking the "Full Start Smart Schedule" link below!
After taking the Start Smart Class, students may obtain a Parking Permit by completing the Parking Permit Application form, and then checking in with the Finance Office for further instructions.
